With reference to the article in the foreign papers of yesterday relative to the meeting of the Members of the Legislative Council convened to consider the question of the opium revenue; it is the general opinion that the system proposed is good as an idea, excellent and the question has been thoroughly discussed.
This is a matter of the greatest moment to the revenue of the Colony, as the amount in question is very great. If the returns from the opium farm are small, the Government must be in difficulties, as to its revenue, and will under the circumstances be compelled to raise the taxes in order to make up the deficiency.
